EXHIBITION OPENING - THE BEST EUROPEAN ARCHITECTURE
JANUARY 28, 2025 in CAMP

We meet in front of the main door from Vyšehradska 51 street
Society often underestimates what good, smart architecture can do. It can contribute to solving the complex problems of today's world and respond to the rapidly and radically changing needs of people, emerging issues and various societal phenomena. These are some of the reflections made by the members of the EUmies Awards 2024 jury on the role of contemporary architecture.
The EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award is a biannual architecture prize awarded by the European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe in Barcelona. For the 18th edition, 362 works located in 38 countries were nominated, from which, after an intense journey through Europe and many hours of discussion, the jury members Frédéric Druot, Martin Braathen, Sala Makumbundu, Adriana Krnáčová, Hrvoje Njirić, Tinatin Gurgenidze and Pippo Ciorra selected 40 works for display in the exhibition.

PSYCHOLINGUISTICS
Cafe HusovkaIn the Beginning Was the WordThere is a Czech saying: "Kolik jazyků umíš, tolikrát jsi člověkem" – the more languages you speak, the more you are a person. Speaking more languages enriches our lives and gives us new perspectives. But, as anyone who is bilingual or trilingual will tell you, the relationship between language and identity is a complicated one. The Czech saying could also be interpreted as, "The more languages you speak, the more people you are." Do we really want to be more than one person? To what extent is the way we see the world determined by the language or languages we speak? Just because some Inuit languages have fifty different words for snow, does that mean that speakers of that language see snow differently? And what about children who grow up bilingual? Do they have multiple personalities? And what about language and national identity? Speaking the Czech language is almost the definition of being Czech, but if you are Swiss, you might have one of several different native languages and still be proud of your nation. And what about people who in the course of their lives change the language they identify with most closely. Can you change your "native" language?

OCTOBER - we go together - exhibition guided by the author - Jan Šibík

KAROLINUM - Charles UNIVERSITY
The renowned Czech photographer Jan Šibík will exclusively comment on his works from this locked country full of extreme situations. It is an excellent opportunity to learn about the society where people seem to be the same and yet, there are hidden differencies. North Korea is becoming a player in Russian war against Ukraine sending first 12000 soldiers to support this aggression. The photos are showing the roots of the regime and its character. Cult of Kim´s personality, military approach to daily situations, complete societal manipulation, together with isolated sense of independent existence of individuals, if they feel like individuals.
Jan Šibík (*1963) is an experienced artist and photoreporter, his carrier active journalist over decades. www.jansibik.cz .
We meet at 17:30 for commented viewing but Milan suggests to come earlier and take your time to let it feel on you. The exhibition is open till 19:00.

FUNCTIONALISM IN PRAGUE
9:00 - Visit of Rothmayerova villa - we will meet by the cash desk
11:00 - start Metro stop Hradčanská
Would you like to join us for a tour around the residential area of Baba with an expert in architecture?
The
residential area of Baba is situated on a hill near the Dejvická metro
station, northwest of Prague's city center. Baba is home to 33 villas
constructed between 1928 and 1933 by renowned architects such as Josef
Gočár, Ladislav Žák, and Adolf Loos. These villas showcase the use of
modern materials like steel, glass, and reinforced concrete. Key
features of the functionalist architecture in Baba include
non-load-bearing outer walls, continuous horizontal lines, flat roofs,
and a minimalistic approach with a lack of decorative elements.
While
none of the villas are open to the public, this neighborhood is a
must-see for architecture enthusiasts. A visit to this district offers a
unique perspective on Prague's diverse character.
